Problems in families • The families have to adjust their all needs within their earnings. They need more money to educate their children, attend their family functions and celebrate their festivals. For these occasions they depend on money lenders and get money for higher rate of interest. • The labours have to pledge their ATM card to get money from the money lenders. The money lenders will take all the money in ATM as soon as the salary is deposited in the bank by the management of the plantations. • All family members have to live in single living room leads the adolescent children’s mind go in wrong way. • The drinking alcohol habit of the males in the family leads to suffer their day today family expenditure. • Inter caste and inter religious marriages are very vast in estate areas. • There are no other sources or jobs to earn additional income. Problems of wild animals • The problems of wild animals are very vast in this hill area. Elephants, leopard, cheetah, tigers, and bears give more troubles to the people. • It is very difficult to come out of the house in night times. • Many children and women have been attacking by elephants and leopards very often in estate areas. • It is very difficult to grow pet animals and domestic animals in estate areas because of increasing birth rate of tigers and leopards. • Elephants damage houses, water tanks and shops in dwelling areas in search of food and water. • Dangerous venomous snakes have seen everywhere in estate areas. • Monkeys and lion tailed macaques detach the roof (tiles) of the labour hosues and damage all house hold things. Main problems in Valparai There is no other source of income in Valparai. Only the works here are related to tea and coffee cultivation and production. All the lands are in the hands of the owners of tea and coffee plantation. So the graduates and technically qualified people are in compulsion to seek their proper jobs out of this hill area. Most of the people are here belong to Scheduled caste and scheduled tribes. it is very difficult them to mingle and adjust with city environment. So lack of employment opportunities and unemployment prevail here. In town area many poor people have lived in thatched muddy houses and they have no urinals and toilets. The government has built one toilet in each area. Each area consists of 40 to fifty families. They all have to use this one toilet. There are no proper sanitation and water supply in the toilet. In Corona period many young men were died due to this pandemic and the children and wives of them are now in poor living condition. They seek help to educate their children and a safe technical training for them. There are 15 Tribal settlements including sankarankudi, Kallarkudi, Udumpanparai, Cinchona, Kavarkal,Paramankudi, Sheikalmudi Edamalakudi and Vellimudi located 15 to 20 kilometers from valparai and most of them are lack of proper road facilities. Kadar, Muthuvar, Malai malasar communities have lived in these settlements. Totally 350 tribal families are here. They have lived in muddy bamboo thatched houses without electricity and basic facilities. Some social service societies here in Valparai formed Self Help Groups to eradicate the mentality of people dependency on money lenders. But this leads them a way to avail loans from Micro Finance institutions without the knowledge of the NGOs. Many money lenders have started microfinances Like Asirvatham Microfinance, Gramin Microfinance
