the journey of swavalambi traces back to grassroots mobilization efforts in the marathwada region. under the grassroots leadership program, collective discussions were initiated in 2014 to address shared challenges faced by women and to build pathways for sustainable solutions. that year, a group of 32 women, along with representatives from local organizations, began uniting widowed and deserted women. this initiative led to the formation of a platform called ekal mahila sanghatna, which evolved into a strong community-based women’s collective. although unregistered, the ekal mahila sanghatna operated with structured committees and boards of office bearers at the taluka (sub-district) level. women were mobilized and engaged in addressing concerns related to their cultural identity, education, health, and dignity. to strengthen this network, women’s groups were established at the settlement level, village branches at the local level, and committees at the taluka level. the covid-19 pandemic became a turning point, when women collectively recognized the need for sustainable livelihoods. in dharashiv district, this led to the creation of a women’s credit cooperative; in ambajogai taluka, a women-led fund company was established. farmer women members from dharashiv and beed districts later founded the swavalambi nari agrotech farmers producer company with the aim of advancing sustainable agriculture and economic self-reliance. throughout this journey, local organizations and community associations across various talukas have extended support. however, to further strengthen women’s leadership, enhance their skills, and provide comprehensive financial and legal backing to community-based organizations, a registered entity became essential. responding to this need, the swavalambi social welfare foundation was established in 2025. today, the foundation actively works across beed district’s beed, kej, and ambajogai talukas, as well as dharashiv district’s dharashiv, paranda, kalamb, washi, and bhum talukas. to date, over 3,200 women have been organized, while nearly 350 women entrepreneurs in ambajogai taluka are being supported through the fund company and the farmers producer organization to establish and scale their enterprises. the vision and establishment of the swavalambi foundation are rooted in the extensive social sector experience of its founder-director, mr. ram bhimrao shelke, who has contributed to organizations such as bharat gyan vigyan samaj, samata pratishthan, and coro india. the foundation was created as a natural progression of these grassroots efforts, with the objective of addressing emerging challenges and advancing community-driven, sustainable development.
