chotanagpur craft development society (ccds) is a not-for-profit development organization with over 30 years of grassroots experience in designing and implementing integrated livelihood, environmental restoration, and skill development initiatives in states of jharkhand and chhatisgarh, india. ccds works at the intersection of sustainable natural resource management, traditional crafts, agriculture-based livelihoods, and community empowerment, with a strong focus on tribal and rural communities. thematic focus areas ccds’s core thematic areas include: • sustainable mining & environment restoration • skill development and trainings • fruit-bearing, medicinal & native species plantation / afforestation • agriculture and allied activities, including agro-forestry, intercropping, millet cultivation, and wadi development • eco-tourism development • flora and fauna conservation / wildlife conservation • water resource management and conservation • art, culture, and traditional crafts promotion • women empowerment through livelihood interventions geographic presence ccds operates extensively across jharkhand, chhattisgarh, and west bengal, with deep institutional relationships with community institutions, line departments, csr foundations, and local governance structures. key programmes and achievements over the years, ccds has implemented a wide range of state, national, csr, and foundation-supported programmes, demonstrating strong execution capacity across diverse thematic areas: • skill development & alternative livelihoods: ccds has trained thousands of artisans and youth in traditional and contemporary livelihood skills, including bamboo craft, wood craft, dokra art, jute craft, lac bangles, sabai grass craft, rugs and carpets, dolls and toys, data entry operations, and value addition of ntfps such as mahua. major clients include the mukhyamantri laghu evam kutir udyog board (govt. of jharkhand), national jute board, day-nulm, dc handicrafts (ministry of textiles), tribal welfare department, government of jharkhand, ranchi municipal corporation, urban development & housing department, govt. of jharkhand etc and csr partners like hindalco and amar mahavir mining private limited. • art and culture promotion: ccds has played a significant role in reviving and strengthening indigenous crafts, training over 2,000+ bamboo artisans, hundreds of wood, dokra, jute, and lac artisans, and supporting market linkages, common facility centres (cfcs), and enterprise readiness across jharkhand. • agriculture, agro-forestry & horticulture: ccds has implemented large-scale plantation and agro-based livelihood programmes, including over 3 lakh horticulture and forestry plantations under national horticulture mission, national mission for sustainable agriculture (nmsa), wadi development supported by nabard, and csr-supported agro-forestry models. interventions span mango, guava, lemon, papaya, moringa, millet cultivation, and intercropping systems, covering thousands of hectares. • environmental restoration & biodiversity management: ccds has executed multiple biodiversity management plan (bmp) projects for mining areas, including miyawaki plantations, butterfly and bird habitat restoration, herbal and flower gardens, grassland restoration, and community-based interventions such as apiculture and ntfp value addition. these initiatives have been undertaken in coal and bauxite mining regions of chhattisgarh and jharkhand in partnership with hindalco under csr and sustainability mandates. • water resource management: ccds is actively engaged in watershed development, soil and moisture conservation, including treatment of over 100 hectares in pilot phases with plans for scale-up to 1,200 hectares, supported by nabard. • eco-tourism development: ccds has successfully designed and implemented eco-tourism infrastructure, including the design, development, construction, and commissioning of a bio park at a mining site in ranchi district, integrating biodiversity conservation with community awareness and green livelihoods. • women empowerment: ccds places special emphasis on women and vulnerable groups, including training and livelihood support for rehabilitated girls from juvenile homes, women artisans in jute and craft-based enterprises, and provision of toolkits, raw materials, and working capital support. institutional strength with three decades of field presence, ccds combines technical expertise, community trust, and strong implementation systems. its proven track record with government departments, csr foundations, and national missions positions ccds as a credible partner for integrated projects that link livelihood security, ecological sustainability, and cultural preservation. ccds remains committed to fostering resilient rural economies, restoring ecosystems, and empowering communities to sustainably manage their natural and cultural resources.
