Helpers of the Handicapped, Kolhapur is a registered voluntary organization working for the empowerment and rehabilitation of persons with disabilities for over four decades. The organization is committed to making persons with disabilities productive, self-reliant, and dignified members of society.

The organization primarily serves rural and economically disadvantaged communities, with a special focus on children, women, and youth with disabilities. Over the last 44 years, Helpers of the Handicapped has supported more than 38,000 persons with disabilities through education, medical assistance, vocational training, assistive devices, and rehabilitation services.

Major initiatives include:

  • Inclusive School – Samarth Vidya Mandir & Vidyalaya, Unchgaon, Kolhapur
  • Hostel-cum-Rehabilitation Centre (Gharonda)
  • Vocational Training Centres
  • Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Services

2. Background & Need Statement

Children with disabilities from rural and low-income families face multiple barriers in accessing quality education. These include poverty, cost of schooling, transportation challenges, medical needs, and lack of family resources.

Many parents are daily wage workers or marginal farmers and are unable to bear the recurring educational expenses of their children. Without external support, these students are at high risk of dropping out of school, which limits their chances of independent and dignified living.

To address this critical need, Helpers of the Handicapped proposes a Student Sponsorship Programme for 49 students with disabilities for the academic year 2026–2027.
